It is mentioned in the fourth century BC in Greek literature. Aa number of Greek amphorae and shipwrecks along the coast of Mljet testify that the Greek sailors stayed on Mljet shores during the trip.
Mljet National Park covers a large part of the island, several villages, two salt water lakes - Veliko and Malo Jezero, a Benedictine monastery on the islet of St. Mary, and Polace is the best natural anchorage around the Adriatic.
