Korčula - Croatia

The birthplace of Marco Polo, Korčula was built on the foundation of Greek colonies, historical and tourist center of the largest island of the Dubrovnik area. It is easily recognized by the streets in a grid of fish and preserved Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

 
Among them is the Cathedral of St. Mark's with rich interior, which houses works by great Italian painters. Korculans preserve their customs in medieval knight game Moreška which is happening on the streets of town.

Light Mediterranean cuisine is a challenge for the most fastidious gourmets palate. With gifts of the sea (shellfish, fish, crabs) and delicious desserts like cukarini, Dubrovnik rozata, klašuna excellent fit local Korčula wines - Grk, Pošip, pumice and Rukatac.

 
Near the town of Korcula is an archipelago made of 20-odd uninhabited islands with dense underbrush and accessible coastline. There is a little bigger Badija island with pebble beaches and a beautiful Franciscan monastery.
