The name comes from the Pharos - the Greek name for island and town, that stood where today is Stari Grad, which in the 13th century assumed the role of an island resort. The fortress Španjol high above the city offers a magnificent view of the Pakleni islands (ACI marina Palmižana) and the open sea.
Main square in front of the cathedral next to the Arsenal and the oldest European theater from the 17th century, is a favorite gathering place for tourists. In a variety of museums lies a very valuable works of art (Last Supper from the 15th century Franciscan monastery in the dining room), and tourists are happy to visit the Benedictine monastery known for its production of lace made of agave fibers.
