Benkovac is a town in Dalmatia, 30 kilometers away from Zadar in traffic-favorable location where is the crossroads of the roads leading from Zadar to Knin and the Lika towards the sea.
In the wider area of Benkovac there are many valuable cultural and historical monuments from antiquity through the most important medieval period until today (the remains of ancient and medieval cities Asseria, Nedinum, Corinium and fortifications Perušić, Islam, etc.).
In the village of Sopot near Benkovac site is a stone statue from the 9th century where is the first time carved the name of the Croatian prince - Branimir. On a hill above the town stands the castle Benkovic, once a medieval fortress that was in the 15th century gave to build Croatian noble family Benkovic, after which the city probably derives its name. Today the castle is a museum, and at the foot of the citadel, are the catholic Churches of St. Anthony and Our Lady and the Orthodox church of St. Jovan.
